Dan & Mick Build A Couple Of Tube Amps!

Dan & Mick Build A Couple Of Tube Amps!

March 22, 2019

This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/rBV4FYCPoIY

In this episode we board the TPS charabanc and head north, following tales of a near-hermit-like being, who, in return for crossing his palm with silver, would educate us in ye olde ways of building tube amps. Or valves if you’re British.
Thusly, we crossed river and ravine before happening on the opening of a great cave, strewn with the carcasses of dead amps the souls of those who had abandoned them. Uttering the magic words, we were granted entry and following a soldering initiation test, festooned with the jewels of the hermit’s brain. Or if you’d prefer…

Chris Fantana of Rift Amps walks us through building a couple of Fender 5E3 Deluxe clones.
We then return to Schwangri-La and plug ‘em in. Simple as that!

A word on cabs and speakers. Chris has a cabinet supplier who builds and covers the cabs, so we don’t get into that in this video - it’s a step too far for a single day! The choice of tweed or Tolex is purely cosmetic - we thought we’d have one of both.
The speakers themselves are WGS G12Q. We might get into trying different things as time goes on…

Danish Pete Pedalboard Build – That Pedal Show

Danish Pete Pedalboard Build – That Pedal Show

March 15, 2019

This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/p3DQaN7yzos

In today’s episode Dan puts together a pedalboard for our wonderful friend and all-round awesome geezer, Peter Honoré. For anyone who doesn’t know, Danish Pete is a professional guitarist whose day job is over at Andertons TV on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/user/AndertonsMusic

A master of taste and touch in his playing, Pete requires a relatively simple but versatile board based around the Schmidt Array SA-450 platform. Dan and Pete talk through the pedal choices before assembling it all in terms of layout, power and audio.
Apologies in advance for the lengthy section on the H9 and MIDI. Why anyone subjects themselves to this remains a total mystery to me – Mick here – but hey, some of you krayzee kids just love this stuff.
Apologies also for the highly average production today. No Simon = me trying to remember how the cameras work and forgetting to turn lights on, etc. Ha!
Enjoy the video!

RAT Distortion & RAT Alikes

RAT Distortion & RAT Alikes

March 8, 2019

This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/ub9KjynPa6Y

In this episode we get down and dirty with arguably the king of classic distortion devices: the not-so humble ProCo Rat. In equal parts loved, despised, revered and feared, its contribution to music over the past 40 years is immeasurable. Dan has always been a fan, me less so, but this episode has definitely made me rethink everything I thought I knew about the raucous rodent!
We run through a bunch of Rat and Rat-alikes and ask most of the obvious questions. It begs a follow-up episode featuring more of the more contemporary takes on the circuit, but as ever we can’t do every pedal in one episode. Enjoy!

Spring Reverb – That Pedal Show

Spring Reverb – That Pedal Show

March 1, 2019

This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/ljv0hymTx60

In this video we drip slowly into the tank of spring reverb. Among the oldest effects anywhere – not least for guitar – a classic spring reverb uses a physical tank, in which sit a number of real springs with an input transducer at one end and an output transducer at the other. Audio goes in, excites the springs, and the resultant sound is swathed in ambience. We love it.

However, not all amps have spring reverb – or any reverb at all all for that matter– so what options exist for you to add to your rig? Thus we compare three genuine spring-equipped outboard units with some more compact digital takes on the spring reverb sound. Let’s get washy, baby…

A note on the Anasounds tanks. If you’re at all confused which one you’re hearing, you can see the red and white cables plugged in to the tank being used at the top of the screen.

We’d also like to apologise for the aural confusion caused by talking over the reverb trails. One day before the end of time, Dan will learn that he has to let the reverb die before talking. Imagine the thing that annoys you the most. Then times that by 100. Danish Pete says he has a solution… but they don’t use room mics. I’ll stop moaning now, but I’m not answering any comments on it because I’m tired to almost-death of explaining it over and over again. The voice mics are gained waaaaaay louder than the amp mics, so the amps are waaaaaay louder through the voice mics than through the amp mics. You bring the voice mics up because Dan starts talking, and then the sound of the reverb is unrealistically loud, negating the point of doing a reverb demo because you can't hear the trails properly. I’m going for a valium and lie-down. Mick here.

We hope you enjoy this episode…

This segment is where we answer your questions and comments – hopefully every Monday.
The main focus of the Q&A will be the main show that went out on the preceding Friday, but we'll answer other stuff too.

Here's the link to the main show being discussed – we were discussing mini pedals: https://youtu.be/0RCQTEvj7P4

Big Vs Mini Pedals – That Pedal Show

Big Vs Mini Pedals – That Pedal Show

February 22, 2019

This is the audio to our video here: https://youtu.be/0RCQTEvj7P4

In this episode we take a first step into a question that gets asked all the time. Well, a couple questions actually: what’s all the fuss about mini pedals, and are they as good as the big versions?

So in this, erm, not exactly rigorously scientific examination, we schwang through some sounds courtesy of five pairs of pedals in regular and small formats to hear what we think.
We will revisit this using some other kinds of pedals in the future, and maybe even do a mini pedals challenge. In the meantime, enjoy this episode!
