Dave Gregory: 12 Strings, XTC & More!

May 17, 2019

This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/EYVgr7NCYEY

In this episode we are delighted to welcome Dave Gregory to the TPS studio. Dave has garnered much praise and respect for his work in British rock band XTC from 1979 to the late 1990s. Melodic, creative and always moving forwards, Dave’s playing inspired a whole generation of guitarists, not least a young and eager Australian with long, flowing blonde hair and a penchant for elaborate inversions. Yes, in a tale of ingenuity and daring, the Australian dreamt of leaving the endless sunshine, free-flowing beer and barbys so that he might be nearer to his hero. In Swindon.

10,000 miles and much alopecia later the Australian tracked down Gregory in Wiltshire and persuaded him to join his band, Tin Spirits, whereupon the fairytale was complete. He even asked him to be a guest on his YouTube channel along with a trio of Rickenbacker 12-strings, a Strat and an ES-335.

Well that’s one reading of it anyway. Enjoy the show!

What’s The Point Of Always-On Pedals? That Pedal Show

What’s The Point Of Always-On Pedals? That Pedal Show

May 10, 2019

This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/m49jK-49BFA

In this episode we discuss the concept of ‘Always-On’ pedals with some practical examples of how you might use them. Lots of people use a particular overdrive or preamp; perhaps a compressor or a slapback echo as their always-on pedal. We propose that they fall into four basic categories that may be functional, tonal or both. 1. Buffers; 2: Tone/EQ shaping; 3: Gain and dynamics; 4:A specific effect, eg reverb, delay etc.
Clearly you can use any pedal as an always-on pedal, but here were are attempting to narrow the discussion a little bit in our area of all-round rock, blues and roots playing, and offer some useful ways to proceed if you’re new to this train of thought.
No doubt there will be plenty of questions arising – Ladbrokes has great odds on a million questions about buffers again. We’ll address it in Monday’s VCQ. But if you’re confused just remeber three things: 1. Buffers give you noticeable high-end and presence back if your signal chain is suffering from capacitance-induced dullness. 2.… Make most vintage overdrives and fuzzes sound rubbish when placed before them. 3. If you use loads of true-bypass pedals chained together and no loop switcher, you might benefit from one… Try it before and after your overdrives. We prefer them after.
And, 'What about EQ pedals? Surely they are a prime example of an always-on pedal?' Yes. We talk about EQ, but not necessarily in the context of a specific EQ pedal.
Anyway, enjoy the show…

How To Choose The ‘Right’ Overdrive Pedal – That Pedal Show

How To Choose The ‘Right’ Overdrive Pedal – That Pedal Show

May 3, 2019

This is the audio for our video here: https://youtu.be/pMpJuFJBTsQ

Okay, despite the slightly click-baity title, this really is not a video for beginners. Or at least it’s not a video for anyone looking for quick and easy answers because we’ve spent decades and umpteen thousands of pounds finding out that there really is no simple answer to the question, ‘What overdrive pedal should I buy?’

However, we do have a better question for you that will be infinitely more helpful: ‘What do I want an overdrive pedal to do?’ We propose in this video that there are four common answers to that question and as such, help you significantly narrow down your OD pedal choices.

But we haven’t included //insert every pedal in the world here//. No. This video is about concepts and understanding – gain structure, headroom, dynamics, the guitar-pedal-amp ecosystem because, well, head back to the first paragraph.

TLDR? TLDW? We understand, but just know this: an hour and 17 watching this video, and a few others on our channel will save you years of getting it ‘wrong’, we promise.

Enjoy. If you dare…

Thoughts For Two Guitars In A Band – That Pedal Show

Thoughts For Two Guitars In A Band – That Pedal Show

April 26, 2019

This is the audio for our video here: https://youtu.be/YSf3m9siUwo

In this episode we take a very gentle stroll through some of the issues you might face when there are two guitars in the band. Clearly this is an almost endless topic so we’re starting with the really basic stuff.
We’ve all been there with volume struggles, tones not working together, poor definition of parts… and worse than all of that: not knowing what to do about it. So Dan and I talk through some ideas that may help before indulging in some petit jammagé at the end. Where the gremlins begin…

SORRY ABOUT THE DEAD CAMERAS
We had a massive whoopsie-daisy in this episode with cameras. Particularly annoying as we are actually doing something different and no doubt you’ll assume there’s some kind of foul play going on. It's not the case, we just lost media from two cards. Arrrrggggg!!!!
Before the cameras die, Mick’s guitar is panned slightly left; Dan’s slightly right.
During the jams however you’ll hear Mick right and Dan left because that makes more sense when you’re looking at our pedalboards. We didn't edit the jams at all so they are a bit meandering. We left it all in as the sounds are interesting even if the playing isn't ha!

HOW DID YOU MAKE THE BACKING TRACKS?
I used the Drummer in Apple Logic to create some grooves. Then I called up the loop library in and simply dragged in some bass parts. During the filming I was playing it from my laptop over our PA speakers, enabling Dan and I to jam over. I then simply put the tracks underneath the show audio, lined it up, and did a super basic mix. That’s it.

Enjoy the episode, we hope it helps spark some ideas and inspiration to play with other humans! (Or machines, ahem).

Mick’s Vlog – New Saddles & Deeper Thoughts

Mick’s Vlog – New Saddles & Deeper Thoughts

April 23, 2019

This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/zGN3WzUe7u0

IF YOU WANT TO JUST HEAR THE SOUNDS, SKIP TO 23:05

Mick here – hello – and this is a vlog in a series about mods that are happening to my favourite guitar, ‘Blue’, a common-or-garden American Vintage ’62 Stratocaster from around 2000.

I replaced the bridge with a Callaham unit a few months back – https://youtu.be/c8VrLWnW8Pk – and have since realised that while I love the vibrato action and stability, also the increased presence and direct nature of the tone, it might have gone a step or two too far and be a little //too// forthright – maybe even brittle – for my personal tastes. (Remember that every Strat is different and everyone’s tastes are different as are our playing styles.)

So like the fervent ferret chasing down the hole for the rabbit that has probably long since scarpered, I’m off down there asking if one set of bent steel saddles could possibly sound different from the next set. Well guess what: they do!

Admission: this isn’t really a 42-minute video about saddles at all.

WHAT AMPS & PEDALS DO I USE IN THIS VIDEO?
Look at the lights on the G2 switcher: if two lights are illuminated next to the switch, the pedal is on.
• KingTone The Duellist
• Klon Centaur
• Analog Man ARDX20 Delay
• Two-Rock Classic Reverb Signature 100/50
• Two-Rock Bloomfield Drive 40/20
• Two-Rock 212 cabinets with TR 1265B speakers

With the greatest of respect and heartfelt thanks for ALL your comments, I’ll answer some probable topics arising below, to save having to do it multiple times in the comments.

Q: Have you tried //insert saddle name here//? I really love them and they work great on my Strat!
A: Probably, but the only ones I’ve ever truly liked are the bent steel ones.

Q: Have you every tried a Suhr/Anderson/Danocaster/SVL etc? They’re great!
A: All of them. I spent almost 20 years as a journalist on probably the world’s best guitar magazines. But at this point in my life, the aesthetic, historical, musical and cultural value of a genuine Fender Stratocaster is more important to me. Which is why I’m saving up for an old one. ALL guitars are individual and if I pick up The Magic Guitar one day, it might not matter what it says on the peghead. Maybe.

Q: But surely the frikkin saddles can’t make //that// much difference? Just play the damn guitar!
A: You’re right in any sort of sensible context. However this isn’t sensible and everything does make a difference; everything matters physically… moreover, psychologically. And if you have actual control over your brain, you’re doing better than about 98 per cent of the rest of the human race.

Q: Can’t you just turn the treble and presence up or down?
A: Sure. But it’s more than that. The guitar’s hardware makes a fundamental difference to how it resonates; it’s not purely about EQ. I wish I had better means to describe it. It’s a physical connection as much as a tonal response.

Q: No audience will ever discern this you idiot.
A: Yeah, I know. But they know when you give an inspired performance and that is related directly to being truly connected with your sound. No middle man.

Q: Your depression revelation is alarming. Please don’t talk about this crap in guitar videos.
A: Watch the regular show. We try to keep that about guitar stuff, mostly. But these are our vlogs and sometimes we’ll talk if we want to. It might actually be necessary for our wellbeing. ps. It’s my vlog.

Q: What about the pickup change?! Come on man!
A: Hopefully by the end of May. I need some days to get it done!

And we propose, “Fear not ye auditorially anxious. For we possess the learnings to cure your complexion with these 11 Great Ways To Use Modulation. Heed ye these teachings and carry forth the sonic delights within to whomsoever shall grant ye audience. Go forth and modulate!”
